Where Jaipur is a pink city and Jaisalmer a golden city, Jodhpur, sprawling along the fringes of the forbidding Thar Desert, is a blue city. Blue, not for any lakes that reflect the clear azure of the skies above, but because of the tinted wash that is used to colour the houses of the city. A distinctive colour that some believe actually denotes the dwellings of the Brahmins of Jodhpur, the blue is in reality a result of the addition of copper sulphate, which is added to the wash to deter termites.
